Canadian Online Poker 2026

Online poker in Canada has one answer: Ontario. It's the only province with regulated, private-operator online poker — PokerStars, 888poker, and BetMGM Poker all operate under iGaming Ontario licenses. Every other province? No regulated online poker at all. Provincial lottery platforms don't offer poker. If you want legal, regulated online poker in Canada, you need to be in Ontario. And your winnings aren't taxed.

All Other Provinces

No regulated online poker. Provincial lottery platforms (PlayNow, PlayAlberta, Mise-o-jeu, ProLine+) do not include poker products. Poker requires player-vs-player pools that single government operators can't sustain.

British Columbia — PlayNow has no poker
Alberta — PlayAlberta has no poker
Quebec — Loto-Québec has no online poker
Manitoba / Saskatchewan — WCLC PlayNow has no poker
Atlantic Provinces — ALC ProLine+ has no poker

Live poker at land-based casinos is available across Canada — only online poker is Ontario-exclusive.

Why Don't Other Provinces Have Online Poker?

Sports betting and casino games work under provincial lottery monopolies because they're player-vs-house — one bettor is enough to run the business. Poker is fundamentally different: it's player-vs-player. You need enough players at every stake level, every game type, every time of day to keep tables running.

A provincial lottery platform serving 1-5 million residents simply can't generate enough concurrent poker players to sustain viable games. Ontario works because iGaming Ontario lets established operators (PokerStars, 888poker, BetMGM) bring their technology, marketing, and expertise — creating a real poker ecosystem for 15.8 million residents.

Until another province adopts Ontario's open-market model, regulated online poker will remain an Ontario exclusive. Alberta is the most-discussed candidate, but no legislation exists.

Live Poker Across Canada

Online poker may be Ontario-only, but live poker rooms operate coast to coast.

Playground Poker (QC)

Kahnawake, Quebec — one of the best poker rooms in North America. 50+ tables, daily tournaments, WPT and EPT stops. The gold standard for Canadian live poker.

Casino Rama (ON)

Orillia, Ontario — large poker room north of Toronto. Regular tournament series and active cash games. Connected to the Ontario iGaming ecosystem.

Fallsview Casino (ON)

Niagara Falls, Ontario — premium poker room with stunning views. Active cash games and tournament series. Popular with both Ontario and US (New York) players.

River Rock Casino (BC)

Richmond, BC — the largest poker room in Western Canada. Active daily cash games and tournaments. Serves the Vancouver metro market.

Casino Calgary (AB)

Calgary, Alberta — regular poker games in Alberta's largest city. Also Deerfoot Inn & Casino and Grey Eagle Resort & Casino offer poker.

Casino de Montréal (QC)

Montreal — Quebec's largest casino has a poker room alongside Playground Poker, making Montreal one of Canada's best poker cities.

Canadian Online Poker FAQ

Where can I play online poker in Canada?
Ontario is the only Canadian province with regulated, private-operator online poker. PokerStars Ontario, 888poker Ontario, and BetMGM Poker Ontario all operate under iGaming Ontario licenses. No other province offers regulated online poker — provincial lottery platforms (PlayNow, PlayAlberta, Mise-o-jeu, ProLine+) do not include poker.
Why is Ontario the only province with online poker?
Ontario is the only province that opened its market to private operators (April 2022). Online poker requires player-vs-player pools — provincial lottery corporations haven't built poker products because the player pool economics don't work with a single government operator. Ontario's open-market model lets established poker operators (PokerStars, 888, BetMGM) bring their existing technology and player-pool expertise.
Can I play on PokerStars from other provinces?
No. PokerStars Ontario only works within Ontario's borders. If you're in BC, Alberta, Quebec, or any other province, the app will geoblock you. There is no regulated online poker outside Ontario. Some players use offshore/grey-market sites, but these are unregulated and offer no consumer protections.
Are poker winnings taxed in Canada?
No — gambling winnings (including poker) are not taxed for recreational players in Canada. This is a massive advantage over the US where tournament wins of $5,000+ trigger 24% federal withholding. Canadian recreational poker players keep 100% of their winnings.
Will other provinces get online poker?
Unlikely in the near term. Online poker requires player pools that provincial lottery monopolies can't sustain. Unless another province follows Ontario's open-market model (allowing PokerStars, 888, etc. to operate), regulated online poker will remain Ontario-exclusive. Alberta is considered the most likely second province to open its market, but no legislation exists.
What about live poker in Canada?
Live poker is available at casinos across Canada: Casino Rama and Fallsview (Ontario), Playground Poker (Quebec — one of the best poker rooms in North America), River Rock (BC), Casino Calgary and Casino Edmonton (Alberta), and others. Live poker is not restricted to Ontario.
